What Will I Gain?
Living Arts is an interdisciplinary living-learning community of U-M undergraduates designed to maximize residents’ creative capacity. Living Arts exists because developing creativity is both inherently rewarding and, increasingly, necessary for employment in the 21st century. According to a 2010 survey conducted by IBM’s Institute for Business Value, CEOs identify creativity as the most important leadership competency for the successful enterprise of the future.
As a resident of Living Arts, students will benefit from:
- A safe place to experiment and “play” intellectually.
- A small, welcoming community within UM.
- Courses and other programming designed to encourage and support creative interactions among students with a wide range of majors and interests.
- Open access to in-house studios designed to foster residents’ creative work.
- Designated study and classroom space within the residence hall, as well as individual and group practice rooms, a gallery for student work, and performance space.
- Opportunities to interact with faculty from many different disciplines.
- Activities with renowned artists, engineers, and other experts who visit UM every week.
- Mentoring by older students, mentorship training for second-year students, and leadership opportunities with sponsored student groups.
